I'm not a fan of Ubuntu simply because it is based on Debian unstable, but I can see why they did this because the lack of a visible start button in Windows 8 is obviously going to prove to be a pain

I've been using linux for about 15 years, its sad that ubuntu literally burned one of laptops to a crisp.

What's 'immature'? Me making fun of their ad phrase, them for advertising of rival product, or their retracting of it?

don't worry. i don't go around insulting people in the comments section. i meant canonical. they're frivolous and ubuntu *sucks*. installed it on my sister's computer over the weekend and it's an amazingly *unpolished* and unstable product. bunches of little problems all over the place, and i'm guessing it will get worse in time.
and btw i haven't booted into a single windows machine for work or at home in over 3 years. so i had no issue with windows bashing per se, it's just that canonical have no leg to stand on.

...and it's your own fault anyway! Non-LTS are development editions anyway. For usable everyday machine, get Ubuntu LTS, or even better, Debian Stable.

So, you used (the new) Ubuntu once, for a short while and therefore believe you have the proficiency to judge it as far as to state it sucks? I've been using Ubuntu for over four years now and while it has its ups and downs it has yet to leave me down. The newest release has imho been more than a success. Unity actually became faster, more stable and definitely more polished. The way I see it Unity was useless up to until recently, but now it has become a legit user interface.
I'm not saying that I am fully supportive of their attitude towards Windows 8, even though I hate its guts myself, I'm just saying that by stating that Ubuntu sucks you're being just as immature. Sure, it might have a few glitches for you, it can't work perfectly on all the hardware, nothing does, but it doesn't suck because of that. Besides, if that's all that annoys you you could always fill a bug report and help get it fixed.

And I'm not just writing that to protect Unity, I actually got rid of it in favour of Xfce, I just think they've been doing a pretty good job on it recently.

i understand. if ubuntu is all you know then you will be used to its crap. same goes for windows users. if you don't have the experience of better things i'm sure it seems okay to you. on the other hand, i am spoiled by, and used to the stability of debian and i just could not believe the problems i encountered on a new install of ubuntu. it doesn't matter if i ran it for 2 hours or 2 years. actually it's much worse if problems show up so quickly.
and i don't care about "unity" and what not. i can use any DE. maybe i shouldn't criticize canonical because they clown around saying unity's better than windows 8 - like the unity UI is any more familiar to users than metro. the thing that interests me is the system underneath, and in ubuntu it's just wobbly - compared to stable distros.
i should add i also ran fedora for several months this summer and it was also very stable and reliable compared to ubuntu.
that said - i don't care what you feel you have to defend on the internet, or why you do it, you're entitled to it. i don't care what you run, your choice. i'm not trying to tell you not to. but i am certainly entitled to post my own opinion, especially one that is honest and truthful, based on facts. if you cannot stand an opposing view, or simply don't like what i'm saying, remove my comments. but don't try to tell me i don't know a crap distro when i see one.

I don't only know Ubuntu. I'm a regular Arch user and have went through a bunch of distros including Debian, CentOS, Mint, Elementary, DSL and even checked out a couple of Unixes. The thing is that Ubuntu has always just worked and even if it didn't I never had to spend much time to fix it up. Plus it's convenient since pretty much everything comes pre-packaged for Ubuntu.

Now about your bashing of it. You say that Ubuntu is a crap distro and that you've based this opinion on facts. I'm sure that in that case you wouldn't mind providing some to back your statement with then? If it's that unstable and awful, how could it have stood out between all the distros this much? Just look at thee Google trends comparison graph. [link] It doesn't come preinstalled like Windows, it's not advertised like OS X is, it's just one of the distros. I'm not saying that the masses always go for the best option, far from it, but there has to be something to it. I mean even Google uses it on its workstations. And that's without looking at Ubuntu server edition and other flavors. If you think it's crap you're gonna have to back your opinion a bit better than just saying it's unstable for you. Until then your comments just look like hateful bashing, neither constructive nor helpful. And I don't feel like I have to defend anything, but if I see someone hating on something which I have nothing against I'd at least like to hear their reasons for doing so.
